Many
have pointed out the discrepancies between Stanley Kubrick's enigmatic
2001: A Space Odyssey and the year we have just lived through.
There are no single stage spaceplanes climbing to L5 space colonies.
No Hilton's in space. No phone calls to Daughters from orbit.
No
huge bases on the Moon... or under it.
Perhaps
the only similarity between the ideal of Space Odyssey and the
reality of 2001, is the inevitable use of technology as a weapon.
Kubrick's first murder is STILL going on; possibly the only aspect
of his masterpiece that everyone understands.
There
are those who have put different tools in Moonwatcher's hand,
and others who know that the Monolith; a gift left for us by those
who provided the technology in the first place, was not found
buried beneath the lunar surface waiting to be uncovered, but
patiently awaiting our arrival in orbit above the plains of Mars.
There
are even those who fear the results of our procrastination when
we realize just how important the advances we could have made
will be in 2003; the NEW date for the end of the world when we
may pay the true price for putting off the inevitable, and ignoring
the last words of one who knew...
Dr.
Heywood Floyd.
