It
is said that Arthur C. Clarke, when pondering how "Planet Of The
Apes" won the best make-up Oscar when it was up against 2001:
A Space Odyssey, explained that the judges must not have realized
that Kubrick's apes weren't real! That, and the fact that no one
would DARE remake 2001, speaks volumes about possibly the most
perfect film of the 20th Century, much less 1968.
Planet
Of The Apes WAS remade however, in 2001 and this may not bode
well creatively for the 21st.
Unfortunately,
it is the pre-packaged, pre-sold, and systematically marketed
product that will rule 2002; a planned "Year of War" that has
almost nothing in common with the Vision given us 33 years ago.
It
is the Monkees that have inherited the earth.
